Today I would like to discuss one of the most basic forms of exercise available, it is free, you can do it almost anywhere and requires no membership fee. What is this amazing health improving activity? Walking offers many health benefits & is a great place to start your new healthy lifestyle! Walking is our most basic form of activity and one that is a big part of being human. Prehistorically Humans were hunter gatherers & we found food by walking around. One of the problems in our modern world of convenience is a lack of physical activity. We now spend a lot of time sitting and this contributes to a host of health issues including weight gain.
Walking is easy to do and helps our bodies in so many ways! First walking benefits our cardio vascular system, referring to our heart, lungs & blood vessels. Getting out and pumping your lungs improves their efficiency and revs up your metabolism, burning more calories. A healthy heart pumps blood more efficiently lowering your blood pressure. Exercise in general also lowers your blood sugar which is a big help for those of us that deal with type 1 diabetes. When we eat sugar it ends up in our blood, most of us produce insulin which takes the sugar from our blood and transports it to our cells for use as fuel. Type 1 diabetics have insulin that is not working efficiently. Exercise such as walking makes this insulin do its job better. When our bodies work more efficiently we lose weight!
There are other benefits from keeping active with walking. As your walks get longer and faster your leg muscles will get stronger. Take a hike uphill to strengthen your glutes! The light stress from your daily strolls will increase the bone density of your legs. Exercise in general is a big mood elevator, so if you deal with depression get out there and walk away the blues!
